But, do you know how to get rid of stink bugs?
As stink bugs make their way into people’s dwellings seeking shelter from the cold winter months, there are things homeowners can do to keep the pests from getting in - and get them out if they do manage to break in. The following is advice from Pests.org, which features online pest control business and method reviews as well as general information.
To get rid of stink bugs, try some of these tips:
Cultivation - Most stink bug infestations occur near uncultivated areas - they love the ground cover provided by weeds. So, cultivate that land and destroy potential stink bug habitats.
Favorite foods - Stink bugs prefer corn, berries, alfalfa, and wheat - if you’re growing those, keep your garden free from weeds to reduce the number of stink bugs you attract.
Seal entryways - Damaged door linings and windows are great places for stink bug nests. So, repair torn screens, vent your attics and crawl spaces, weatherstrip your doors, and pay attention to your fireplaces for holes.
Wash your plants - If you see stink bugs on your tomatoes or apple trees - hose those plants down with water to force the bugs away.
Lavender oil - Mixing water and dish soap with vegetable, lavender, or olive oil then spraying it in the garden can deter stink bugs. Pests.org provides this recipe: 1 part water, 1 part dish soap, and 1 part lavender oil. Shake well before each application.
Stink bug deterrent spray - You can also buy stink bug repellent.
Neem oil - Neem oil, like lavender oil, gives off an odor stink bugs try to avoid. Spraying it around a home’s perimeter could deter stink bugs. The oil can also be used indoor
Call in the pros - If all else fails or if you’re dealing with a serious infestation, pest control specialists are trained to handle stink bugs.
BONUS - Mowing over an area where stink bugs are living will not remove the pests - they’ll just relocate to another nearby area.
